The Catholic University of Zimbabwe celebrates Blessing Gijima, a Business Management & IT Level 2.2 student, who recently had the honour of representing Zimbabwe at the CAC African Continental Track Cycling Championships held in Abuja, Nigeria.
The continental competition brought together some of the best track cyclists from across Africa, creating a highly competitive platform for athletes to test their skill, discipline and endurance at an international level. For Blessing, taking part in such a prestigious event was both a personal milestone and a proud moment of national representation.
Speaking about the experience, Blessing described the opportunity as “an incredible experience and a proud moment” both personally and nationally. Competing against elite cyclists from different African countries gave him valuable exposure to the demands of high-level sport and strengthened his passion for cycling.
What makes his participation even more remarkable is the fact that Zimbabwe currently does not have a velodrome track for athletes to train on. Track cycling requires specialised facilities, and competing at continental level without access to such infrastructure demonstrates exceptional resilience, courage and determination.
The experience also provided important life lessons beyond the race itself. Blessing reflected that participating in the championships taught him the value of hard work, resilience and determination. It also inspired him to continue pushing beyond limits and striving for excellence in the sport.
As the Catholic University of Zimbabwe, we are proud to celebrate students who pursue excellence not only in the classroom, but also in sport, leadership and national service. This achievement is a powerful reminder that young people can rise above challenges, represent their country with pride and inspire others through dedication and discipline.
CUZ congratulates Blessing Gijima for flying the Zimbabwean flag high in Nigeria and for representing the University with honour on the African sporting stage.
