CUZ Social Work Students Explore Sexuality and Sex Education in Katho-Led Seminars

The Catholic University of Zimbabwe (CUZ) hosted three half-day seminars on sexuality and sex education from 7–9 October 2026, equipping 92 Social Work students with practical skills and deeper insights into sexuality education and its role in professional social work practice.

Facilitated by Franziska Sawitzki and Jennifer Jung from Katho, Germany, the seminars explored sexuality and sex education within the context of Social Work, combining theoretical perspectives with interactive learning and critical reflection.

The sessions examined the meaning, content and objectives of sex education, while highlighting how language can either encourage open conversations about sexuality or create barriers to meaningful discussion.

Through interactive exercises and group discussions, students reflected on personal and societal values, norms and stereotypes surrounding sexuality. They also explored challenges associated with discussing sexuality in social work practice and considered practical ways to approach sex education in tertiary education settings.

The seminars provided a platform for students to engage with a subject that requires sensitivity, openness and professional understanding. By examining how attitudes, social expectations and language influence conversations about sexuality, participants gained valuable perspectives relevant to their future work with individuals and communities.

Feedback gathered during the evaluation sessions was largely positive, with many students expressing appreciation for the seminars. Participants also recommended that sex education be incorporated into the Social Work curriculum to strengthen their academic preparation and practical skills.

The seminars reflect the importance of equipping future social workers with the knowledge and confidence to engage in informed, respectful and constructive discussions about sexuality. Integrating sex education into professional training could further support students in preparing for the diverse needs and experiences of the communities they will serve.
