Catholic University of Zimbabwe Hosts Quality Assurance Capacity Building Workshop
On Thursday 24 October 2024, the Catholic University of Zimbabwe (CUZ) held a Quality Assurance Capacity Building Workshop, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to maintaining high standards in higher education. Facilitated by Prof. Chabata from the University of Zimbabwe, the workshop attracted key CUZ staff members, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Zinyemba and Registrar Dr. Mada. Held from 9 a.m. until noon, the event underscored the importance of quality assurance (QA) in enhancing educational excellence.
Prof. Chabata’s presentation covered essential elements of quality assurance, focusing on both theoretical concepts and practical approaches. Key topics included:
Defining Quality Assurance (QA): The session began with an overview of QA, laying the foundation for understanding its critical role in institutional development.
The Evolving Landscape of Higher Education: Prof. Chabata discussed the shifts in higher education and the increased necessity for robust QA measures, given the sector’s changing dynamics.
Quality Assurance Standards: Emphasis was placed on the ZIMCHE standards that guide QA practices and how they can be customized to fit the unique environment at CUZ.
Benefits of Strong QA Structures: A well-structured QA system was highlighted as essential for continuous improvement, bolstering CUZ’s position both locally and internationally.
Establishing QA Committees: Recommendations were made for setting up QA committees across various institutional levels to ensure oversight, consistency, and shared accountability.
Challenges and Considerations: Prof. Chabata discussed common challenges in QA implementation, along with strategies to overcome them for a more resilient system.
Quality Assurance System Development: The importance of designing tailored QA systems and policies was emphasized, with actionable steps for effective monitoring and evaluation.
System Monitoring, Surveillance, and Enhancement: Prof. Chabata concluded with insights into monitoring QA systems, ensuring they adapt to changing needs, and continuously enhancing them to support CUZ’s mission.
